Used Mercedes-Benz

Mercedes-Benz is a German car company which can trace its roots back to the first car ever made, the Benz Patent-Motorwagen of 1886. The Mercedes-Benz brand was created in 1926 following the merger of Karl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler’s companies.

Mercedes-Benz has a reputation for building cars of immense quality, solidity and reliability such as the S-Class, the E-Class and the SL. The quality of Mercedes cars took a bit of a downturn in the late 1990s; however, the company is now back on top form. Second-hand buyers should be aware, however, that Mercedes cars from around 1995-2005 can be troublesome.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class was launched back in 1997, and was a radical departure for the company. A medium-sized family car with an MPV-like profile, the A-Class was initially lauded for its innovative design and good looks. However, the A-Class was the main victim of Mercedes’s cost-cutting during the late 1990s and original cars can be unreliable and expensive to maintain. A new model in 2005 rectified this and a third-gen model in 2012 was even better. Second- and third-generation A-Classes make excellent second-hand buys thanks to their good looks, practicality and desirable badge. The Mercedes-Benz B-Class, launched in 2005, is essentially a slightly larger version of the A-Class and is also a good used buy.

The C-Class is Mercedes’s compact executive saloon, designed to compete with the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4. Launched back in 1993 to replace the 190E, new C-Classes were introduced in 2001 and 2007. The C-Class is an immensely capable and luxurious compact exec and is a good used choice thanks to its rock-solid build quality and classy looks. The C-Class is available as a saloon, estate and coupe, meaning that there’s a used C-Class for everyone.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is Merc’s executive car and has been in production, in one form or another, since the 1950s. The majority of used E-Classes on the market are W124 models (1984-1996), W210 models (1995-2003), W211 models (2002-2009) and W212 models (introduced 2009). Providing you steer clear of the notoriously iffy W210, the Mercedes E-Class is an excellent used buy due to its immense quality, desirability and status. Saloon, estate and coupe models are all on offer, and there are plenty of second-hand E-Classes to choose from.

The Mercedes S-Class is Merc’s top-of-the-range luxury saloon which has been in production since 1954. The S-Class is one of the most technologically-advanced cars in the world and, due to steep depreciation, it can make a cracking second-hand buy. Most of the S-Classes on the market are either W220 models (1999-2005) or W221 models (introduced 2005) and both cars offer unrivalled luxury and status.

Mercedes-Benz is also renowned for its sports cars such as the Mercedes SLK and the Mercedes SL. Both of these are superbly engineered sports cars which are readily available on the second-hand market at good prices. Expect luxury, good performance and reliable running.

Mercedes-Benz also produces a range of off-road vehicles which are all readily available second-hand. The M-Class, G-Class, R-Class and GL-Class are all popular used choices thanks to their image, performance and off-road ability. You’ll need deep pockets to keep them on the road though.
